 WHAT TO WEAR

The general rule for portraiture is that we don't want to notice the clothes themselves; they should serve to accentuate the subject. For this reason, solids are best, and patterns are to be avoided. Long or ¾ length sleeves are best for most adults.

    For black and white portraits
The clothes that photograph best on black and white film are black, white and denim. White should be used minimally because it draws the viewer's eye away from the subject.
    • Adults should wear black bottoms and black tops. Interesting necklines for females photograph well (v-neck or sweetheart). Jewelry should be simple or wedding rings only even.
    • Maternity moms should wear white or black button-downs and other black tops.
    • Infants in a plain white diaper or with bloomers to cover the diaper for girls. It is so sweet to see their bodies when they are small. They won't be this little for long!
    • Toddlers often have denim overalls or pants. Just add a white or dark solid shirt (brown, navy, dark green, etc. all look close enough to black with black and white film).
    For color portraits
Black and denim also photograph very nicely in color. Other colors that look great are deep red and bright blue. Remember to wear solids instead of patterns.
    • Adults should wear tops in a bold color. It works really well to have one adult in a black top and the other wearing color. The bottoms are still black or denim.
    • Infants still in bloomers or an outfit with faint or no pattern is best. Make sure it fits them well and isn't too big.
    • Toddlers follow the same rules as adults.
 WHAT TO BRING
  • Toys for little ones that get their attention or make them smile and nicer toys they can hold in the portraits (ex., silver rattle) or play with (ex., books and wooden trains). Sometimes infants and toddlers need to hold something in order to cooperate for a portrait. For outdoor portraits, a red wagon or classic tricycle is great. These items are not required- just suggestions.
  • Payment in check or cash the day of the session for the sitting fee.
